mdc and partners host municipal election candidate forums

The mpls downtown council partnered with the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce, Meet Minneapolis, BOMA Greater Minneapolis and the Greater Minneapolis Hotel Association to host three candidate forums in early September highlighting upcoming Minneapolis municipal election campaigns.

The three forums included one for City Council’s Ward 3 race and City Council’s Ward 7 race on September 6 at the Crown Plaza Minneapolis, and the Minneapolis mayoral race held on September 14 at the Radisson Blu. This year’s elections will take place on November 7.

The Ward 3 and Ward 7 forums were moderated by Tane Danger of Danger Boat productions and included the following candidates:

City Council – Ward 3

  • Tim Bildsoe
  • Steve Fletcher
  • Ginger Jentzen
  • Samantha Pree-Stinson

City Council – Ward 7

  • Janne Flistrant
  • Joe Kovacs
  • Teqen Zea-Aida

Incumbent Ward 7 City Council Member Lisa Goodman was unable to attend the forum due to a prior commitment.

The Minneapolis mayoral candidate forum included:

  • Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges
  • Raymond Dehn
  • Jacob Frey
  • Tom Hoch
  • Nekima Levy-Pounds
  • Aswar Rahman

Candidates had the opportunity to discuss several topics including safety, affordable housing, the $15 minimum wage, business development, and the overall vitality of Minneapolis.

The mpls downtown council released its platform statement regarding this year’s municipal elections on February 1, providing three core issues that mdc is watching closely during the election cycle as key topics that directly impact the success and vitality of the downtown core. These include:

  • Safety
  • Active, welcoming environment
  • Fostering a competitive business climate
