Did you know that women hold just a fraction of leadership positions across industries, despite making up nearly half the workforce? As an executive in the nonprofit world and a former commercial producer on Broadway—a space traditionally dominated by men—I feel a deep responsibility to champion women, amplify their voices, and work toward a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive.

International Women’s Day isn’t just a moment of acknowledgment; it’s a call to action. It’s a reminder of the progress made and the work that still lies ahead in creating a more inclusive and equitable world for women everywhere.

The Significance of International Women’s Day

This day is an opportunity to reflect on the incredible strides women have made across all aspects of life. It’s also a moment to honor the women who have paved the way—those who have fought battles, broken barriers, and made lasting impacts. As a woman in leadership, this day holds deep personal significance. It’s a time to celebrate progress while recognizing the challenges that still exist.

Women Leading in Our Communities

In my role with the Minneapolis Downtown Council and Downtown Improvement District, I’ve witnessed firsthand how women are shaping the future of our communities. From leading key initiatives that promote economic development and inclusivity to supporting projects that amplify the voices of women in business, the strength, resilience, and vision of women are undeniable.

When women lead with purpose and compassion, our communities grow stronger. Whether in nonprofits, the arts, or the corporate sector, I’ve seen the power of women working together to break barriers and inspire future generations.

The Work Ahead

International Women’s Day is more than a celebration—it’s a reminder of the ongoing work required to ensure gender equity. Women in leadership need resources, mentorship, and support to continue pushing for meaningful change. It’s about creating opportunities where women across all industries—from Broadway to the boardroom—can thrive and make lasting impacts.

A Call to Action

This day challenges us to do more than just celebrate women’s achievements. It calls on us to:

  • Champion women’s leadership in our communities and workplaces
  • Mentor and support the next generation of female leaders
  • Advocate for systemic change to create lasting gender equity

Let’s continue amplifying women’s voices and building a world where every woman has the opportunity to make a difference. How will you celebrate and support women today?
