member forum: downtown safety initiatives

The mpls downtown council hosted a member forum on downtown safety on April 27 at Mayo Clinic Square in downtown Mpls. The event, hosted by the Minnesota Timberwolves & Lynx and sponsored by Allied Universal, included a networking session, refreshments and a focus on how to keep downtown thriving and safe through different methods and collaborations currently being administered.

The member forum took a look at the newly enhanced safety plan now in place thanks to collaboration between the city, law enforcement, community and business partners. This year’s approach focuses on outreach, activation, legislative solutions and law enforcement with added presence on the streets from April through the end of October. Presenters discussed this year’s safety measures and how they impact our downtown community.

Presenters at the forum included:

  • Shane Zahn, Director of Safety Initiatives, Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District
  • Criminal Presiding & Assistant Chief Judge Toddrick Barnette, Hennepin County, Fourth Judicial District
  • Inspector Michael Sullivan, Minneapolis Police Department – 1st Precinct
  • Major Jeffrey Storms, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Enforcement Services Bureau
