Health + Wellness
with @ericka.jones_
“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” – Audre Lorde.
Inherited legacies about Black women’s health and well-being were inadvertently passed down to me throughout my life. When you look at statistics about the health of Black women, it can feel disheartening. At a young age, I chose to prioritize my own health and wellness to change the narrative. Over the years, I’ve deepened my practices with nutrition, yoga, meditation, and strength training. While I’ve gained more knowledge with the physical pillar of health, for me, health and wellness are not only about movement and physique, but also about discovering what’s going on internally. Building intentional time for self-reflection, social connection, and spiritual well-being is critically important, especially now.
Over the past 20 months, we’ve experienced a lot emotionally, socially, and mentally in Minneapolis. Maintaining my own health and wellness were impactful to navigating through those tough times. They will also aid in carrying me forward to bring healing to the community and enable me to hone my leadership skills.
Thankfully, some of the best places to fill my cup are right in downtown Minneapolis, located throughout the North Loop, St. Anthony Main, East Town, and Central Business District.
Health and wellness are a way of life, and building a community focused on them Downtown brings me so much joy. These spots are diverse, inclusive, and committed to ensuring our community is mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually fit!

Breakfast Bar
North Loop/Warehouse District
319 N. 1st Ave., Mpls, MN 55401
Health is all about balance and feeding your soul. This Black-owned restaurant delivers on soul-nourishment, bringing in tastes and smells that elicit memories from previous generations. The Breakfast Bar is a whole vibe and tastes like my grandmother’s cooking. The collard greens and lobster mac and cheese are to die for. A salad isn’t always healthy—and in some cases—the opposite. I’d rather relish something homemade that feeds my soul over a salad any day.

Core Lifestyle in North Loop is a one-stop catch-all. They have chiropractic care and an infrared sauna—something every Minnesotan needs in the winter months. You can also get a massage, cupping, personal rehabilitation, or personal workout classes with some of the top trainers in the Twin Cities. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming. Each provider works with empathy and takes time to assess the needs of their patients.

The Commons
East Town
425 Portland Ave., Mpls, MN 55488
A lovely green space in the heart of downtown, The Commons offers views of both the US Bank Stadium and downtown skyline. I like to come here with a blanket, play catch with my dog, lay in the sun, sit with a snack, and people-watch. The sounds of the Metro train, with views of the skyline, is the best juxtaposition for meditation practice.

Corner Coffee
North Loop/Warehouse District
514 N. 3rd St., #102, Mpls, MN 55401
Corner Coffee is a small, quaint coffee shop with a neighborhood feel. Sit in a corner filled with greenery and plants for a moment to reflect. For me, health and wellness aren’t just movements, they’re about connection and reflection. I’ve had profound moments of journaling cozied up on one of their couches. Most importantly, as a transplant, I’ve had many meetings and conversations that have led to new connections that have kept me in Minneapolis.
