The world is a sphere of evolving fluidity giving insight to who we are in space and time. According to multi-Grammy award winning composer and producer Quincy Jones, humanity is blessed to have “12 musical notes” that shape our fluidity. Although there are many more musical “notes” beyond those often used semitones, “Q” advocates for a more diverse expression and artist responsibility toward investigating different ways to create, connect, perform, and respond to the “12 notes.”
There are music learning communities nationwide that are trending toward more fluidity in curriculum, pedagogy, and policy. Still, many systemic barriers are normalized and codified as uniquely superior, high quality, or THE standard. As MMEA has collectively learned, our journey must continue together, using equality as the rhythm of the soul that guides us toward artistic freedom and educational justice in music.
Let us ignite the spirit of collaboration by celebrating positive and healthy traditions, while affirming ideas, voices, and pedagogical practices that activate MMEA’s mission and vision.
For MWC 2024, our chromaticism will reflect how learning and teaching can honor the musical footprints that have already created a path, while building pathways together that are pluralistic, interconnected, and fluid for the 21st century musician.
Building pathways together is the right place.
