Valerie Coleman’s Umoja is a stirring anthem that draws its title from the Swahili word for “unity.” The composer states: “Now more than ever, Umoja has to ring as a strong and beautiful anthem for the world we live in today.” Freedom’s Genuine Dawn, written by James Lee III, is inspired by the words of Frederick Douglass’ speech, “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” In his speech it becomes apparent that Douglass did not feel that he or his people were included in the celebrations of independence. Spoken word artist Wordsmith serves as narrator to this important work.
