The mpls downtown council announced key downtown statistics at its annual meeting on February 10 at The Armory, including an updated top 15 largest downtown employers list and the latest downtown residential population. Below is a look at some of the statistics from the past year:

Current downtown population: 53,093
Downtown has welcomed 12,299 new residents since 2016.
Since 2006, downtown has seen a 66% increase in its residential population.
Downtown added 2,432 new apartment units in 2020.
Downtown absorbed 269,793 square feet of Class A office space.
Downtown Minneapolis accounts for 36.2% of all Twin Cities office space.
Minneapolis topped $1 billion in new construction permits for the 9th straight year.
Of the $1.78 billion in permits, $804 million were from downtown’s Wards 3 and 7.
Downtown’s top 15 employers make up 23 percent of the downtown employee
count.
Eleven, featuring 118 condo homes, is the tallest building constructed in Minnesota
since 1992.
First Avenue celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Both Target Center and the Mpls Convention Center turned 30 years old.
